How Whisper Vault Works, One Lantern at a Time

It's 11 p.m. You're in bed, replaying the exact second you said "sure, happy to help" to your friend's weekend move. You meant no. You always mean no. This is the kind of moment Whisper Vault is for.

By Thursday you'll have forgotten about it. Next month you'll do it again. And on a bad week, your brain will swear you never change.

Whisper Vault is a private journal built around one small act: lighting a lantern for a moment you're proud of, especially the hard or confusing ones. That's the whole idea. The rest of the app helps you understand the moment, or keeps proof you got through it.

Whisper Vault home screen at night on desktop: "Welcome Back, Sam", a "Find clarity with Koan" button, a moon over the water, and glowing lanterns on it

Your home screen. Every lantern you light floats here.

Let's follow that yes through the app.

1. Get it out of your head

Open the app and write it down. "Said yes to the move. Meant no. Annoyed at myself, again." Messy is fine. Spelling doesn't count.

You can tag the entry with who or what it's about: a person, a pattern, a goal. That matters later.

2. Light a lantern when you're proud of yourself

Two weeks later, someone asks for a favor and you hear yourself say, "I can't this time." Tiny sentence. Big deal. It felt awkward and a bit confusing, and you did it anyway. That's worth being proud of, so you light a lantern for it: a few words, and how it felt.

Your lanterns float on the water on your home screen and slowly become a trail. Walk back along it any time and open one.

3. Ask Koan what's going on

Some things keep coming back. The yes-when-you-meant-no thing turns up again, wearing a different outfit. That's when you pick the tag it keeps hiding under and ask Koan.

Koan reads only the entries you've chosen to share with it, then writes you a reading: what might be setting it off, the pattern underneath, and your own words quoted back as evidence. You get to see the loop from the outside. It won't hand you advice or a verdict on what's wrong with you, and it isn't a chatbot to argue with at midnight. (There's a whole post on why it's named after a Zen question.)

It can also suggest one small next step, a courage step or a care step. Here, maybe: say no to one small thing this week. Keep it as a goal, and every lantern you light for it gets counted. A goal slowly becomes a pile of real moments.

If a line in the reading lands, press and hold it to keep it.

4. Check in with Your Inner World

Every day, Your Inner World has a short read about you. Think of it a bit like a daily horoscope, except it's written from your own life instead of the stars. It brings back the goals you're working on, the people you're focusing on, your recent lanterns, and any lines from Koan you chose to keep.

It's for the bad days, when your brain insists you're back at square one. There are your own words from when you began, and every lantern since. Turns out you've been moving.

Your Inner World, Goals you set down: three goals with their dates and the words written when each began, such as "Let others see the real me" and "Stop overcommitting to prove my worth"

Who can read this?

Every journal in Whisper Vault is encrypted, so your entries are stored as text we can't read. Koan only sees the entries you choose to share with it, and you can change that whenever you like.

Where to go from here

Tonight, if you catch yourself replaying a yes you didn't mean, write it down somewhere. That's step one, and it counts.

If you're curious why any of this exists, the founder tells the story in I Wanted to Build a SaaS. Then Life Chose the Problem for Me. And for what "seeing the loop from outside" looks like in a real life, read The Fake Version of Letting Go.
